Agri-food companies are assessing their impact on nature, including the leading global provider of crop inputs and services, Nutrien. Nutrien is part of a case study for the “SUSTAIN project” also known as Strengthening Understanding and Strategies of Business to Assess and Integrate Nature.
The case study focuses on businesses in the agri-food sector, particularly Nutrien and Olam Agri, and their strategic approach to addressing nature-related risks through the ACT-D framework (Assess, Commit, Transform, Disclose). Both companies are integrating nature into their operations to mitigate impacts and dependencies on natural resources, such as water, soil, and biodiversity.
Nutrien's approach includes assessing nature dependencies and impacts at manufacturing sites, focusing on water and biodiversity. Olam Agri emphasises regenerative agriculture, identifying high-risk locations for intervention and working with farmers to improve sustainability. The companies face challenges like supply chain traceability and nature-related risk reporting, but are using tools like TNFD’s LEAP approach and nature-positive roadmaps to guide their strategies. These efforts are part of a broader goal to align with global frameworks like the Global Biodiversity Framework.
